Persimmons are produced in tropical to temperate regions across the globe and are known by several names, including Persimmon, Asian or Japanese Persimmon, Kaki Fruit and American Persimmon.

This deciduous fruit is very popular in the Far East where both consumption and production levels are considerable. It has gained popularity in Western markets during the past few decades and commercial production of this fruit started in South Africa in the 1990s.
