There are a few architectural gems to be found in Calvinia, including the neo-gothic Dutch Reformed church and a number of early Victorian townhouses dating back to 1850. For those who are historically minded, a visit to the Calvinia museum is a must.
This well-run facility is located in the old Jewish Synagogue, which was built in 1920 and donated to the town in 1967 when the once-prominent Jewish community had dwindled. The museum can give you a good walking-tour map that guides you on a pleasant stroll through all the important sites in town, including several of the original town houses that were built over 150 years ago.
In terms of activities, the nearby Akkerendam Nature Reserve is the place to go if you want to do some hiking, and several farms offer 4x4 routes. Flower-spotting and a drive along the remote Tankwa Karoo National Park will enthuse any nature lover.
