Spend the day exploring the area’s rich marine life on a boat-based whale watching excursion, or for the more adventurous a shark cage dive. The area surrounding Dyer Island and Shark Alley is world renowned and home to the Marine Big 5. Depending on the time of year, you have the chance to see whales, dolphins, cape fur seals, african penguins and great white sharks, potentially in a single trip.
Dyer Island is located 8 km from shore and is also an Important Bird Area (IBA), declared to conserve its many resident bird species. Next to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock that is home to approximately 60,000 Cape fur seals and one of the hotspots for Great Whites.
Shark Alley is not only the ideal hunting ground for sharks, but it is home to the highest concentration of Great White Sharks in the world. The narrow channel that runs between it and Geyser Rock attracts Great White Sharks in their thousands.
Found in cool, coastal waters around the world, great whites are the largest predatory fish on the planet. They grow to an average of four and a half meters in length, though specimens exceeding six meters and weighing up to 2 000 kilograms have been recorded.
