Named after its founder, Sir Robert Stanford who owned the original farm, the small village of Stanford was established in 1857. The town is known for its beautifully preserved Cape Victorian and Edwardian style houses and buildings.
The village is also known for the Stanford Food Heroes, a group of culinary artisans that works to increase access to fresh, organic and sustainably grown produce for the community. Their range of locally produced products can be purchased at the morning markets over weekends.
Just outside of Stanford, you can go on a guided tour of Platbos, an old-growth indigenous forest where you will see tree specimens that are over 1000 years old. The forest is also home to a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles and invertebrates.
After your morning hike, you can enjoy lunch at Madres Kitchen. Known for its family-friendly environment and country cooking, the restaurant is surrounded by vineyards and has a trampoline and vast fields for the kids to run wild in. You can also visit the little store that stocks a range of handmade goods, vintage finds and bottled preserves.
After lunch you can take a leisurely drive back to Cape Town.
