It is the forerunner of the University of Cape Town (UCT), and started out as an educational experiment in an attempt to redress the abysmal state of schooling and teaching in the Cape Colony during the 19th century.

Situated on the slopes of Devils Peak, the school has magnificent views of Table Mountain and the surrounding natural environment.

SACS is known for its excellent academic, sports and cultural achievements. SACS is also one of four schools expressly named by Cecil John Rhodes to offer an annual Rhodes Scholarship to one of its graduating students.
