The days of carrying a huge backpack and spending nights on the ground with the night creepers are over: long live slackpacking, where someone else carts your kit from place to place, and where the places in question have crisp linen, fine food and usually a good bottle of wine on the table.
The Giant’s Cup 'hikeathon' slackpacking option of this normally five-day backpacking hiking trail can be done as a two-or three-night weekend hike. Your bags get ferried to the overnight spot, a very comfortable guest house near Underberg, and during the day you walk not so much in the shadow of the Southern Drakensberg as in the sunshine, up and down over its toes.
