SAFGA Flower Production Tips

Although the market for flower production in South Africa has downsized, SA Flower Growers Association still encourages flower growers and producers to continue their farming operations.

SA Flower Growers Association offers the following tips to the country’s flower growers:

Stick to a conventional business model that meets your operational needs, and ensure that you have a good estimate of all your input costs and income.

Choose your market wisely, as you can benefit from selling to more than one market, either wholesale, florists or private vendors. Supplying to a retailer also has advantages, as growers then do not have to market their products.

Keep in mind that your business will be affected by natural occurrences beyond your control, such as droughts, strong winds and heavy rainfall. It is important to know the climate of your area of production and plan accordingly.

Flower production can be quite labour-intensive, so it is vital to adjust your labour structure, whether it is part-time or permanent, depending on the season.

Lastly, make sure to join SAFGA for information on the flower industry, as you’ll have access to expert advice from flower producers both locally and internationally.
