The Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens officially founded in 1982; has actually been a popular spot for Roodepoort locals since the 1800s.
You can explore the garden’s Rocky Highveld Grassland and that has over 600 plant species. It is also home to over 200 species of birdlife and other animal species that are native to the reserve. Today, the Gardens offer activities for the whole family from hiking trails, picnic areas, various themed gardens, an education centre, restaurant and a special Children’s garden.
The garden has a magnificent 3,5 kilometre geological trail that begins at the Witpoortjie Waterfall and takes in many different geological formations. Information markers along the way explain what you're looking at, so you don't need to be a geologist to enjoy the trail. Keep an eye out for the 3 600-million-year-old greenstone formation.
Roodepoort also has a few popular nature reserves, where you can find big game in their natural habitat. Kloofendal Nature Reserve is a popular attraction that offers both natural environmental tours, historical and archeological spots to explore.
The Friends of Kloofendal offer 2-hour guided nature walks with qualified guides over weekends. These walks provide information on flora, fauna, geology and gold mining in the reserve. Picnic facilities are present, so hikers and families can enjoy a picnic in the beautiful surroundings after their walk.
Roodepoort is host to the biennial Roodepoort International Eisteddfod, at Florida Lake. Formerly a marshy area, the lake is a popular recreation area, especially with water-sport enthusiasts, while the western part is an important breeding area for a variety of waterfowl. The park also has a putt-putt course, a swimming pool and an adventure park for the kids.
The Ruimsig Country Club is one of South Africa’s finest golfing spots. It has an 18-hole golf course designed by golf champion, Gary Player.
