In 2010, Nicky and the Tullies took the plunge and decided to join forces, going into the partnership and taking ownership of the Lanner Hill label. The 2010 vintage of Lanner Hill Sauvignon Blanc was the last produced under the Kumkani label by Nicky Versveld as cellarmaster at The Company of Wine People.
Currently using rented cellar space and taking it vintage by vintage, Nicky and the Tullies' new venture is still in its infancy. But the committed vintner is thoroughly delighted: 'Vintage 2011 was my first as an "independent"!' And waiting in the wings at Lanner Hill are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Shiraz, and Viognier, in preparation for his considerable skills.
Nicky and partner Lucille are settled in Stellenbosch and his son Charles and daughter Celia are grown and established in their own careers.
'When other people cook, I always interfere; so when I'm cooking, the kids invariably come and fiddle to tease me!'
David Tullie is ensconced on Lanner Hill. Energetic and vivacious Nicola shuttles between the two, on a mission to tell the world about Lanner Hill. 'Her' winemaker reckons she's great at the job. 'She talks even more than Lucille,' Nicky teases gently.
In addition to his partnership with the Tullies, he's building up a winemaking and vineyard consultancy business, currently assisting in selecting the right style of wines for major role players in the United Kingdom and Europe.
His joint venture company, with a silent partner, called Divine Inspirations is producing wine under the Lanner Hill label.
Once a keen golfer and a regular in the annual Winemakers Classic between Stellenbosch and Paarl winemakers, Nicky no longer plays. 'But I'm crazy about the sea and do a Jot of shore and deep-sea fishing. I have a house in Struisbaai, where we regularly get away on holiday.'
Nicky's adored dogs Nuke, the long-haired German Shepherd, and Bella the young border collie flop, wiggle, and play at his feet. He steps over them patiently. 'Bella was a birthday present from the family; to keep me company when I travel around the Winelands.'
Having Bella onboard while out and about is just one of those little perks he's enjoying as an independent winemaker, finally able to live life on his own terms.
