Modimolle, formerly Nylstroom, is a town located near the Waterberg region in Limpopo Province. Formed in 1866 on Rietvallei farm, the town became known officially as Modimolle in 2002. Though its previous name, Nylstroom, is worth knowing more about, if only for its funny origin story.
Legend has it, that a party of Voortrekkers, called the Jerusalem Trekkers, were in search of the holy land and mistook Kranskop (Modimolle Mountain) for a pyramid and the nearby Mogalakwena River for the upper course of the River Nile. This confluence of confusion resulted in the town acquiring the name Nylstroom, which in English translates to ‘Nile Stream’, when it was first founded in 1866.
