A town known for its vast natural beauty, Modimolle is often touted as being the commercial centre of the Waterberg region. A claim that is easily justified by the town’s prodigious agricultural pursuits. Its small town specialities include the exportation of peaches, grapes and watermelons; while peanuts, maize, game and cattle are also popular products of the town.
Its expanding business sector has garnered Modimolle the position of being the commercial centre of the Waterberg. This is statistically evident by the town’s impact on the Waterberg district, as it represents 13% of the district area and still contributes nearly 7% to the region’s gross geographic product (GGP). This economic result is largely due to its active agricultural outputs.
A particular speciality of Modimolle is its production of table grapes. Visitors and residents can partake in the enjoyment of the fresh fruit (including citrus) and vegetables that are on offer at the town’s farmers' market.
To those in the know, the town’s agricultural and farming characteristics are not out of place, as the very name Modimolle, which originates from the Tswana phrase: “Modimo o lle”, means “God has eaten” or “the forefather’s spirit has eaten”. This phrase has additional interpretations such as “the place of spirits”, each one significant and indicative of the town’s agricultural charm.
