A Place to Relax - Activities
Madikwe Game Reserve, North West Province

The Madikwe River Lodge guides have stories to tell about habitats and behaviour of all mammals, insects, trees and plants.

Game Viewing

First-time visitors on safari will realise that there is much to see and explore over and above the Big 5. This means that a game drive or walk is always packed full of fascinating information, and sightings of the Big 5 or the Super Seven are not the only pleasure in the reserve.

Sightings of wild dogs, which are usually quite rare, are highly likely to be seen here. As the dogs were an important part of Operation Phoenix, which saw the introduction of game to what was previously infertile farming land. They are a fascinating species to observe with a strict hierarchy within the pack. If you’re lucky cheetah may be seen, but don’t overlook the delicate behaviour of the varied antelope species, extensive bird life and a myriad of smaller mammals. Bird watching can be highly informative with a guide who has extensive knowledge of their habits and habitats.

Dining

Lunch on the main lodge deck while the river runs by is a welcome time to relax and chat about sightings on the morning game drive. A romantic dinner under the stars in the boma accompanied by animal and insect night calls is always a favourite. For cooler evenings at Madikwe River Lodge, scrumptious meals are better enjoyed in the dining room. Special dietary needs are also catered for with some forewarning when you book.

Kiddies Morning Game Drives

Madikwe River Lodge understands that getting kids up and ready for the early morning game drive is often a fraught task. They have therefore introduced a special kiddies morning drive, which departs after breakfast. This shorter game drive engages children with a short attention span, teaches them about the beauty and variety of nature, and may spur an interest in them that lasts a lifetime.
