In 1991, Madikwe was declared a reserve on what was previously seriously depleted farming land.
Thousands of animals were brought into the area in a project known as Operation Phoenix. The result of this ongoing conservation & care is that game viewing is spectacular and will not disappoint. Etali’s waterhole is visible from the dining area- this is great armchair viewing! Three of the 8 suites look on to the waterhole, while the remaining 5 look on to the paths leading to the waterhole. This means that game viewing is possible even before one sets off on the game drive or walking safari.
There are two daily game drives with highly experienced Etali rangers & trackers. The morning drive in crisp air before the heat of the day sets in is worth the early wakeup call. The late afternoon drive followed by a sumptuous dinner holds the possibility of seeing stealthy nocturnal animals lurking amongst leafy foliage. For city dwellers, this is an experience not to be missed.
Etali has a Wellness Spa offering specialised pampering treatments for men, women and teenagers. For a complete top to toe experience, add to the body experience with time spent in the steam room and gym. Indoor & outdoor showers in the suites and water therapy planned by the Spa staff ensure that you will leave here having experienced the true meaning of Etali - ready for new beginnings.
During your stay at Etali, you can experience and learn more about the Southern Hemisphere night skies in South Africa. An astronomer visits the lodge on a monthly basis to do training with field guides. If there is interest expressed by guests, he will come in at no extra charge, to explain the wonders of the heavens. Intimate weddings and small conferences for up to 20 people can be custom designed by the Etali team to suit one's every need.
