Plains Camp is well known for its walking safaris in the Kruger National Park.
An impressive 147 mammal species inhabit this intriguing reserve. In addition it boasts 517 bird species, 49 fish, 34 amphibian, 114 reptile and 336 tree species. Afternoon and evening activities usually comprise a combination of a short walk and a 4x4 game drive.
The length of this afternoon activity is usually decided upon between the rangers and the guests. This also includes a refreshing sundowner before heading back to camp for dinner around the campfire.
These walks take place with a maximum of eight guests accompanied by two armed guides. Morning walks take place early to ensure that you return to camp before it gets too hot. The average morning walk takes 3-5 hours, totaling around 5-12 kms.
The terrain is fairly even and the assistant trail guide carries a first aid kit, as well as snacks for a refreshment break on the walk. The guide is tailored to suite the ‘slowest’ participant, but overall, one should have a moderate fitness level.
This is the perfect activity to take part in along with your walking safaris. Sleepouts are weather dependent but highly recommended for those looking for a unique and immersive outdoor experience.
These are set up on elevated decks (safety always comes first), right under the open sky with views of the nearby waterhole. All that will be separating you from the wilderness, will be your shade cloth tent. Two armed rangers will also be close at hand for this one.
