Off the Beaten Track - Activities
Kruger National Park

Outpost Lodge sits in a private concession in the Kruger National Park, Makuleke is well known for its wildlife.

Game Drives

There is a large population of hippos and crocs at the confluence of the Limpopo and Luvuvhu rivers at Crooks’ Corner. Amongst the more unusual sightings in the Makuleke are eland and Sharpe’s grysbok. You can embark on twice daily game drives to explore the area. If the morning drive is a little too early for you, opt for the evening option.

With the aid of a spotlight, see the regions nocturnally active creatures such as bush babies, genets and civets. Perhaps you may even come across some Lions feasting on a fresh kill. Keep an eye out for owls such as the Pel’s Fishing Owl, the Scops, Whitefaced, Pearl-Spotted and Giant Eagle Owl.

Birding and Walking Safaris

Walking safaris will get you up close to the diverse terrain of the region. Explore the fever trees and monolith baobabs in the mopane woodland, and trek through the open savannah grassland. Your tracker-guide will even show you how to fashion a toothbrush from the branch of a magic guarri tree.

There are over 350 species of birds in this region so don't forget to look up! Your guide will help point out Scarlet chested sunbirds, Broad Billed rollers, Redheaded weavers and Wattle-eyed flycatchers, to name a few.

Cultural Village and Half Day Excursion

Guided visits to Crooks Corner and the Thulamela archaeological site overlooking the Luvuvhu River explore the region’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Artefacts dating from 1460 to 1640 have been found tying them to the last phase of the Zimbabwe culture. A visit to Thulamela is a half day excursion. You also have the opportunity of visiting a Makuleke Village and learning about the history of the Makuleke people under the guidance of a Makuleke guide.
