Your Experience

Midmar Dam situated in Howick forms part of the gateway leading into the Natal Midlands. The most famous event in the area is the annual Midmar Mile, which takes place in February and is the world’s largest open water swimming event. The biggest attraction is the dam itself, which draws in plenty of locals over the weekends, as well as during the school holidays. The water is safe for swimming and the buzz of boat engines and jet skis paired with the cheer of laughter are commonplace here.

Groups of local friends and families flock here to make the most of the semi-tropical weather. Midmar provides a secluded haven from the Durban beaches that can often be a little overcrowded and chaotic, especially during the festive season when the holidaymakers head to the beach.

The area surrounding the Midmar Dam is ideal for bird watching, and has various hiking trails. There are no lurking predators to be found here, but expect sightings of zebra and various species of antelope. The banks of the dam offer braai facilities and picnic spots to simply relax and to enjoy the scenery.
