The Main Caves at Giant's Castle is the most commercialised of any rock-art site.
The fences and boardwalks are necessary to preserve these caves that lie within such easy walking distance of the rest camp. Still, if you take your time and use a bit of imagination, the full splendour of this lost art form will be revealed.
What a tragedy it seems today, that only a few years previously Bushmen were exterminated from the area, for here they might have found a sanctuary. Compounding the tragedy is the fact that the last, lonely individual had a leather belt around his waist, onto which were attached small antelope horns filled with pigment — indicating that he was also the last in a very long lineage of rock artists.
A guided tour of the Main Caves Museum, with part authentic and part reconstructed Bushman scenes, is virtually obligatory for all visitors to the reserve.
