If you are driving back to Durban, we recommend that you spend some time on the Midlands Meander. This artistic and creative hot-spot has welcomed thousands of travellers to its stunning and inspiring surroundings for over 25 years.
It is here that exceptionally talented artists bursting with creative energy put a creative spin on age-old crafts. It is not possible to visit the Midlands Meander without absorbing some of their inspiration, and you’ll probably leave with some original art and the finest craft available in South Africa.
You may also prefer the additional option of exploring the town of Howick to view the Mandela Capture Monument. It is at this very place that Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962 and where he bid farewell to his freedom for the next 27 years. In 2012, a sculpture was erected here to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his arrest.
The sculpture, by artist Marco Cianfanelli, comprises 50 steel column constructions lining up to create the illusion of a portrait of Nelson Mandela. Pause here for a moment to reflect on how much South Africa has changed for the positive in those 50 years.
You may also want to make a short detour just outside of Howick to visit the Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Experience where you can shop for some local crafts, take part in a township or rural tour, relax with the locals in a shebeen (pub) or visit a traditional African church.
