Doringbaai

A tiny fishing settlement in the southern part of Namaqualand, Doringbaai, or ‘Thornbay’ as it was called long ago, lies on the west coast next to the icy Atlantic Ocean.

Doringbaai is about 290 km north of Cape Town and can be reached with the N7 highway, either via Vredendal or the coastal town of Lambert’s Bay. Activities in the area include fishing, spearfishing and snorkelling (permits required), kayaking, mountain biking and exploring the rock pools along the beach.

This solitary stretch of coastline also has a hiking trail along the beach between Doringbaai and Strandfontein and nearby Bamboesbaai is known for its good surfing conditions. The population of the town according to the 2011 Census is 1 260 with Afrikaans being the main language spoken.
