Matzikama means ‘place of water’ and is originally a Khoisan name. The name is combined from the words ‘matzi’ - he gives - and ‘kama’ - water.
This name dates back to the early Khoi inhabitants who lived in the specific mountain range called 'Matzikama'. Known to be agriculturists, water was appreciated as the most important element to make a living.
Matzikama lies to the north of Cape Town in the southern part of the Namaqualand Region. The towns of the Matzikama are dependant on water from the Olifants River and the irrigation canal that supplies water for farming and industries.
