Agriculture in Augrabies

Stone Fruit and Grapes

As the town of Augrabies is situated near the Orange River, the surrounding area is blessed with patches of fertile land amongst the arid desert conditions. All the way from Kakamas to Augrabies, there are various farms dedicated to the production of mostly fruit and nuts, as well as the conservation of indigenous vegetation and animal life.

The Orange River in Augrabies offers fertile land for agriculture, such as stone fruit and table grape production.

Closer to the Orange River, you’ll find table grapes and raisin production in full swing. There are also orchards of stone fruits such as peaches, nectarines and plums that grow in the Green Kalahari. More recently, wine production has also moved up the Northern Cape thanks to the river and its bountiful water, with some farms invested in producing dessert wines of high quality, as well as red and white wines.

Many farmers have also embraced the tourist potential Augrabies has to offer - they have turned their humble homes into beautiful and charming guest houses for those wanting to explore the area, specifically the Augrabies Falls National Park.
