If endless unspoilt beaches, the big blue ocean, small fishing boats, snoek and crayfish are your thing, then Yzerfontein will seem like a match made in heaven. Originally laid out and developed by Abraham Katz in 1937 on the farm Yzerfontein, the village today still stands by its motto: Mare didat, flores decorate - The sea nourishes, the flowers adorn.
The origin of the name may seem simple at first, but nobody agrees on any of the different explanations, ranging from a spring with rusty coloured water and tasting of iron, to simply an indication to the iciness of the water or even that it was named after Jurijan Eijser, an employee of the Company that was sent to the region to investigate the sinking of the Schoonenberg in 1722.
Yzerfontein is a West Coast gem with a stretch of pristine coastline, natural beauty and a range of outdoor activities. It is considered to be the southern extent of the West Coast. Less than an hour's drive from Cape Town it is a very convenient weekend destination.
