Various Trails

The Karoo 4x4 Trail is a 35 km route that takes you over a rocky pass with views of the Hex River Valley and Karoo plains in the distance. The trail splits into three sections with varying degrees of difficulty.

There’s a particularly steep section which ‘separates the men from the boys’ – failure to make the summit results in a long descent in reverse!

The Patryskloof farm mountain biking track is a nice out-and-back option, just on 15 km, mostly along gravel and jeep-track, and not very steep, despite the location on the steep slopes of Du Toitskloof. The surface is rough in places, and watch out for stacks of devil thorns.

A second route option, the Klip Lapa route, is a fast and undulating gravel road out on the Nonna De Wet secondary road towards Robertson and past the Nuy Cellar. Both routes start and end at the Patryskloof Guest Cottage.

Kloofing

Kloofing sometimes involves rope work, be prepared.

The Sluice Gates is a well-known ravine set in the Hawequas Mountains, but this perennial water feature is only for the experienced and the brave.

This is definitely a kloofing experience you will remember for life! With at least a dozen waterfalls and drops (some of up to 80 m) and a range of jump or abseil options, thrills and terror, come packaged as part of this outdoor adventure.

After the first 50 m descent into a deep pool, the ravine cuts a steep and narrow path along the mountain ridge.

Once you put into the Sluice Gate ravine, there’s no going back. A range of canyoning options are on offer near Du Toits Pass, in the vicinity of Grabouw.
