The park has a temperate coastal climate, summers being dry with mist early in the morning and south-easterly and south-westerly winds. It is known for a variety of attractions, but mainly for its flower season occurring annually between the months of August and September, its beautiful wildflowers and daisies drawing crowds from far and wide.

The West Coast National Park allows many activities such as mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, bird watching, picnicking and braaing. This northern section of the West Coast National Park is open to the public only during flower season. While in the park, do the 14-kilometre Steenbok Hiking Trail (only open during August and September, bookings open in June) through a sea of dancing colour.
