Waterval Boven was first connected to the rails in 1894, and was on the line that connected Pretoria with Lourenço Marques at the turn of the last century.
You can ride on these lines today, on vintage rail safaris powered by Class 15F and 25NC steam locomotives and the Jan Wintervogel, the last working NZASM steam locomotive. The route from Waterval Boven through the Lowveld follows the Elands River or winds up through the Mpumalanga Highlands, along what some claim to be the most adventurous steam locomotive routes in Africa.
