The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is located in the Waterberg District of Limpopo, South Africa. The reserve covers an area of 34 850 ha and falls within the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve which was declared by UNESCO in 2001. The name means “well found” in Dutch, a perfect description for this gem of rare natural beauty and a healthy supply of wild animals and birdlife. Along with the Big Five, Welgevonden is a sanctuary to 50 types of mammals, including rare finds such as brown hyena, pangolin, aardwolf and aardvark. The reserve also houses 300 bird species.
Welgevonden is one of the most easily accessible nature reserves in South Africa. There are two airstrips and a helipad on the premises, just a 45 minute flight from Johannesburg. If visitors prefer to drive, they have the option of an easy two and a half hour (250 km) drive from Johannesburg. Follow the N1 towards Polokwane. After the Kranskop toll plaza take the off-ramp onto the R33 towards Modimolle. To get to the Welgevonden main gate, travel straight through from Vaalwater on the R517 towards Ellisras. You will see the main gate on your left after 24 km.

The reserve is dedicated to minimise human impact on the area and have taken measures to preserve nature in its rawest form. The number of guests allowed are limited and no private vehicles are permitted on the premises. There has never been any hunting in the reserve so animals are at ease, allowing for close up game viewing opportunities. Aside from game viewing activities the reserve is also active in biodiversity conservation efforts as well as research and development.
Although the primary activities for visitors at the reserve are centred around game drives and guided nature walks, guests can also enjoy stargazing, immerse themselves in a Bushmen rock art experience or adventure on horseback trails and safaris.
