It is the forests that in the end prevail as the jewel in the Garden Route botanical crown.
Timeless and tranquil as they cascade along rugged promontories towards the coast, this unique biosystem is built around a verdant spread of ancient yellowwoods (Podocarpus), stinkwood (Ocotea bullata) and hard pear (Olinia ventosa). To top it all, Knysna has good weather for most of the year – no matter what the season, chances are your day will be green, temperate and ideal for outdoor play.
The Knysna Lourie is a large turaco bird that is found in the evergreen forests of southern and eastern South Africa.
The Lourie feeds on fruit, insects and earthworms and enjoys hopping through treetops. It has a prominent green-blue body, a red-orange bill and a distinctive white line under the eye.
The Knysna Lourie would be well camouflaged but for its bounding, crashing antics as it searches the forest canopy for fruits and berries. When it flies, the brilliant crimson 'windows' on its wings are revealed.
