Interesting characters and quirky getaways will urge you to surrender to the lure of its sun-bleached streets and many historical buildings with their wide old verandas.

Uniondale came into existence in 1856 through the ‘union’ of two towns, Hopedale and Lyons, and was once quite famous for industries such as wagon-building and ostrich farming. That is, other than for the young woman who died in that car accident on a stormy Easter weekend in 1968, hence the popular phrase ‘The Ghost of Uniondale’.

Uniondale boasts South Africa's shortest telephone pole, its largest watermill, a beautiful church, the world's first heart-transplant patient and an aloe factory.
