Holidays have become such a rush we usually need a break after them. Next time you want to go to Durban from Joburg, pretend it's the 1960s before they built the N3, and take it slow.
From Heidelberg, turn south onto the R549 and head for the Vaal Dam. Trundle your way around Deneysville and Oranjeville to Frankfort, Tweeling and Reitz, before hitting Bethlehem.
From there head to Kestell, Sterkfontein Dam and Oliviershoek Pass, where you should stop in at the Windmill Lodge and the Kerkenberg heritage site. Once past Bergville and Winterton, stay on the old R74 as far as Howick. When you finally have to get back onto the N3, you'll feel like a time traveller, from a better era.
