Trails in Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Climb to the Summit of Generaalskop

If the place was so great that a national park was created just to protect the scenic landscape, you can be sure a hiking trail through Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Free State is going to be a stonker. And it is — just don't expect it to be easy.

Hiking under The Buttress in Golden Gate National Park.

While on day two you climb almost to the summit of Generaalskop (2 732 m), one of the highest peaks in the province, day one, which has you clambering behind those big sandstone buttresses that give the park its name, is even more demanding, albeit only 15 km long. With luck, by the time you get there, the rather tired hut will have been given the necessary upgrade.

Little Caledon River Valley

Although Golden Gate Highlands National Park is situated in the Drakensberg foothills, and has some tough trails to attempt, you could settle for the shorter of several walks in and around the Little Caledon River Valley. The three-kilometre round trip from Brandwag lodge (really 70s ugly) to Holkrans, is easy, has great views and a fascinating terminal point.By David Bristow
