Family Safari Retreat - Activities
Thornybush, Greater Kruger

Set in Thornybush Private Game Reserve, you will have an excellent chance of seeing the Big Five and South African wildlife.

Game Drives

Start your day by getting up before the sun does, and set out in an open Land Cruiser as dawn breaks. Witness the first blush in the sky, the early morning calls as the wild game begins a new day. Watch the various herds and predators with your professional guide explaining and interpreting the animal’s actions.

Ask questions and discuss what you are seeing. Open your eyes to new and varied interactions and associations in the South African bushveld. On each drive, you will see something new, no two drives are ever alike. Children are never too young to appreciate and learn about nature. Your children can join in the children's program and enjoy a variety of child friendly activities.

Bush Walk

For the more adventurous, you can explore and go on a hair raising fun experience by going into an unfamiliar territory on foot. With an armed ranger and guide, you get to experience a bush walk, where you get to to view the wildlife from a different vantage point. Out of your comfort zone, in the wilds you will find a new to respect for the animals. That simple principle will give you a safe and fun adventure.

Bird Watching

Bird watching can be one of the most relaxing activities. Waterside Lodge, situated by the tree lined lakeshore is an ideal place for bird watching. From your patio or by the swimming area are the best spots to indulge in some bird watching and relaxation. It is never too late to adopt this hobby, whilst on safari, you can grab your pair of binoculars and give it a go.

Dining

One of the ways your South African experience can be enhanced is through the cuisine. At Waterside at Royal Malewane, you will never feel hungry. Indulge in a late breakfast after your morning game drive. Just after midday, at around 13h30 it’s time for lunch. Then nibble on pastries and cakes at high tea before venturing out on your afternoon game drive.

During the drives, you’ll get the chance to stop, climb out of the vehicle and take in your glorious surrounds. Watch the sun dip below the horizon whilst sipping a frosty cold drink and snacking on some nuts or biltong (a South African jerky). On your return to camp, sit around the campfire and enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail as you share your safari stories with your fellow travellers.

Dine under the stars, as you feast on a three-course dinner, lavishly made with style and panache. Being a kid-friendly lodge there is a kiddies menu, from which you and your little ones can choose from.
