Kluitjieskraal Route is a challenging mountain biking route consisting mainly of gravel road, with arduous climbs along loose shale and rock. Hectic downhill hairpins mean you need to keep your wits about you, but wonderful views and a spectacular waterfall are sure to keep you coming back for more. The route starts along a fairly flat section through pine plantations, before the 6 km climb to Watervalberg with splendid views over the Wolseley Valley.
After the summit, descend into the Suurbraak Valley along a speedy, flat section of gravel. Before the road ends, turn right to once again cross the Watervalberg. The climb is rocky and technical, so make friends with your granny gear. Cross the river above the waterfall and bomb the contour path through the plantations for a speedy home run.
Wolsely is perfectly situated on Route 62 in the Western Cape, which is the longest wine route in the world. Holidaymakers are spoiled for choice when it comes to wine tasting in the area, as there are various estates and cellars to choose from.
Mountain Ridge Winery is close to the town and offers easy drinking wines with an oak-matured aftertaste. The winery was first established as Romansrivier in 1949, and its first harvest was done in 1950. In 2002 the cellar underwent extensive renovations and has been open to the public ever since.
Other wineries that offer tastings in the area include Waverley Hills Organic Wines, Fable Mountain Vineyards, Lemberg Estate and Fraaigelegen farm, among other fantastic estates and cellars.
