The beach in Port Alfred is perfect for running and walking.

The reserve has several marked routes for you to crank along, as the landscape is ripe for off-road exploration with various options along gravel roads and game tracks.

At dawn, take a canoe up the Kowie River, passing through the (often choppy) Bay of Biscay before the wind gets up, heading around Centenary Bend and on towards Rabbit Rocks. Stop for lunch and then stroke slowly upriver, scanning the forested edges for bushbuck and listening to birdsong. Don't get too mesmerised - it's more than 6 km back to the marina.

East Beach off the Kowie River Mouth in Port Alfred is a fast hollow right-hander breaking over a sand bottom. An occasional short left-hander bowls up in the rip towards the rocks. When the swell is big, the jump from the rocks into the mouth, at the head of the wall, can be rather hairy. Watch out for fishing boats speeding in and out of the mouth with complete disregard. Be friendly to the locals: those with large teeth and dorsal fins, and those who ride surfboards.

Other attractions include: The Big Pineapple (the world's biggest pineapple 15 km from Port Alfred), Kowie History Museum, Richmond House Museum and Great Fish Point Lighthouse.
