Avid adventurers will find plenty outdoor activities in Fraserburg and its surroundings - anything from hiking and nature walks to mountain biking and 4x4 drives. It is truly a dirt road-lover’s paradise, as there are several routes to follow through the arid Karoo and rocky terrain.
The Skurweberg Trail is situated just outside Fraserburg and encompasses a circular 4x4 route of 52 km. The road is rocky and rough, with steep inclines, sandy river banks and high cliffs. It is worth it though, as the view is spectacular and you might be lucky enough to spot some wildlife, like springbok, klipspringer and spring hares. The trail is quite exciting and you can tackle it either with a 4x4 or mountain bike.
You can also enjoy an array of nature walks in Fraserburg - you will see an abundance of spring flowers and the biodiversity of this part of the succulent Karoo is incredible. There are a number of historical attractions as well, such as Victorian-style architecture and Corbelled houses.
Fraserburg’s neighbouring town, Sutherland, is home to the largest single optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere - (SALT). This site is definitely worth a visit if you like looking at stars or are interested in learning more about the beautiful and mysterious cosmos of our universe.
