Travel north from the urban buzz of Gauteng, and in less than three hours you will be able to lose yourself within the timeless tranquility of the Waterberg ranges in Thabazimbi. Thabazimbi, meaning ‘Mountain of Iron’, is a town located at the base of the Ysterberg and is surrounded by the Witfonteinrand and Boshofberg, with the spectacular Kransberg in the background.
The majestic Waterberg ranges in Thabazimbi cover a 150km range, stretching northeast from the town. This primordial and rugged mountain is more than three million years old, and it seemed an impenetrable obstacle to early Trekkers exploring the region.
Densely wooded montane ridges overshadow Thabazimbi, with the mountain range rated as one of South Africa’s lesser-known geographical wonders, producing a blue-tinged backdrop - the Waterberg Biosphere Reserve - which spans a staggering 15 000-sq-km.
The Waterberg offers an amazing escape from the madding crowds, but beware the summer heat, with the temperatures often soaring beyond 40 degrees celsius - most rain occurs as thunderstorms from October to April.
The scenic bush surroundings, nature trails and hikes give the town an allure that attracts birdwatchers and hikers from all over to explore the region.
