This lovely old town is graced with beautiful, whitewashed buildings, museums and historical monuments. Situated close by is the Marloth Nature Reserve, the Swellendam Hiking Trail, the Breede River with its canoe trips and the Bontebok National Park and De Hoop Nature Reserve.
Swellendam is the ideal base from which to do a day trip to Cape Agulhas. Accommodation ranges from backpackers hostels and B&Bs to fine lodges. The little town is dotted with quaint coffee shops and wonderful restaurants to satisfy all palates. Swellendam is situated just 220km from Cape Town on the N2.
Rainfall is spread throughout the year with about 55% of the rain falling in summer, and 45% of the rain falling in winter. There is little wind and temperatures are moderate. The little town is clean and efficiently well run. The people are friendly and hospitable and there is a virtual absence of serious crime.
