Surfing in East London

Nahoon Reef

On a pushing tide, with a medium swell and a fresh southwesterly fanning it, Nahoon Reef can throw anything from a solid six-foot slab of water to a crystal tube at you.

The paddle-out is not as friendly as the cement path over the reef suggests and sharks are common, but a few long rides past the little headland to the corner heals all.

East London coast possibly has the most consistent surfing in the country, with shore and reef breaks working in just about all conditions. Nahoon is the more fickle of these two main surf spots, but when the Nahoon Reef pumps it produces a world-class right break that works best in medium to big swell conditions.

Gonubie has several distinct surfable spots. The Point offers a potential barrel and tight A-frame breaking section on a medium south easterly swell, while Rainbow Valley is a mellow left break that's ideal for beginners and longboarders. The Mouth works in most conditions.
