Stellenbosch is the oldest wine route in South Africa with the largest number of estates, wineries and co-operatives, as well as wine and cultural museums.
Buy a map from the information centre in Stellenbosch and plan a route through the history of South African wine making – allow days rather than hours to do it justice.
The Stellenbosch Wine Route is divided into four sub-routes: Bottelary Hills, Devon Valley Vintners, Helderberg and Simonsberg-Stellenbosch. Start at an estate of your choice and keep going until the tastes and flavours begin to blur. The entrance to each cellar is signposted with the wine route logo. Daily wine tastings, cellar tours and sales are offered at most estates and many also have a restaurant and picnic facilities.
