Services of South African Garlic Growers Association

The South African Garlic Growers’ Association (SAGGA) is a mouthpiece for the local garlic growing industry and provides aid to all industry producers and role players.

SAGGA also acts as a liaison between researches, state officials, groups and growers within the industry. The association’s primary objective is to serve as an instrument in sharing research and information while protecting the sustainability, growth and interest of the garlic growing industry.

SAGGA invests in research projects for the benefit and development of the garlic growing industry. Research projects that the association has conducted provide partners in the garlic growing industry with information about the history of garlic, its medicinal properties and its health benefits.

The research has also aided in providing information more relevant to the farming practice of growing garlic such as the best agrochemical applications, the difference between liquid and powder products; which products have micronutrients, macronutrients and the seed treatment and spraying guides for chemicals.

The research also explores nutritional factors with regard to garlic production. This information is crucial to preserve the sustainability of the garlic industry because it provides local garlic growers’ with accurate information about the nutritional inputs for garlic production.

This research covers correct soil ph, soil temperature, preferable soil types, crop sensitivity and requirements and the correct nutrient interactions such as fertilizers, pesticides and other agrochemicals.

SAGGA provides garlic growers with this information to aid them in avoiding nutritional problems during garlic production and to ensure that the local garlic that is produced is of the highest quality.
