The Drybean Producers’ Organisation (DPO) renders its services to all South African dry bean farmers, producers, researchers and retailers.
The Drybean Producers' Organisation (DPO) specialises in providing industry-related services, up-to-date market information, research programs, export statistics and access to legislation documents.
With due consideration of changing expectations of dry bean producers and their increasing access to information during the past couple of decades, the DPO has continuously strived to adapt to a changing market environment and remain innovative.
They are committed to providing their members with all the market information pertaining to crop estimates, global trends, local market statistics and seasonal sales. The production and market information provided by the Drybean Producers' Organisation (DPO) remains of great value to the producer – as long as it is presented in a pro-active manner and leaves sufficient room for the producer to make their own decisions.
The DPO contributes financially to a dry bean research program conducted by the Grain Crops Institute of the Agricultural Research Council at Potchefstroom. New dry bean cultivars have been of particular importance, as well as research on soil and fertilisation, crop management and climate change, as well as global market changes and nutrition benefits of dry beans.
In addition, the organisation is involved in the marketing of dry beans via Beanex, which plays a significant role in the local and international marketing of the product. It is believed that the Beanex transactions have contributed to a measure of stability in the dry bean market. The main benefit producers derive from Beanex transactions is guaranteed payment. The buyer, on the other hand, enjoys a measure of quality assurance.
Internationally, the Drybean Producers' Organisation (DPO) participates in the activities of the International Pulse Trade & Industry Confederation (IPTIC) in order to remain on top of international trends.
