This KwaZulu-Natal nature reserve is set in a prime location within the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park. The main feature is the world famous Amphitheatre, the most recognisable and dramatically imposing feature of the Drakensberg mountain range. This mighty rock wall is approximately five km in length and 500m high.
There are many trails to explore on foot in the Royal Natal National Park, with a detailed guidebook available for visitors at reception. Short journeys take about an hour, with longer excursions over a half or full day. The Mont-aux-Sources hike is especially well known and takes two days to complete.
Besides the landscape, this is a hiker’s paradise, with a diverse array of habitats that harbour various birds and plants species.
From this self-catering accommodation in the Drakensberg you can hear the rumbling sound of the Tugela River after a heavy storm. The plunging Tugela Falls offers an excellent backdrop for a picnic spot.
Accommodation within the park can be found at Thendele Rest Camp and Thendele Lodge, which provides ample views of the Amphitheatre.
