The rieldans is considered to be one of the oldest dance form in South Africa and originated from the San people. It is a widely practiced dance throughout the Karoo, and it is taught to children from a young age.
The rieldans group of the Middelpos Primary School are popular performers in the Karoo, and you’ll most likely see them at any festival or day show in the region - for example, they are regular performers at the Winterfees in the nearby town of Williston or the Hantam Vleisfees in Calvinia.
They also do local shows to raise money for travelling and costumes. The kids sometimes perform for guests at the Ganaga Lodge in the Tankwa Karoo National Park, and donations are used to fund trips to dancing competitions in the Northern Cape.
