Railway in George

Transnet Railway Museum

What do you do with 15000 m2 of railway shed in George and loads of old rolling stock? You put the one inside the other and you make people pay to come and see them.

Steam Locomotives in the Railway Museum, George.

On display - and I promise you do not have to be a trainspotter to dig this place - are 13 steam locomotives, including narrow gauge engines, Johannesburg's first engine (the Emil Kessler), coaches from the Royal Train and a car and saloon from Paul Kruger's private train. There are also model trains, old motor cars, and just lots and lots of seriously lekker railway stuff. Choo-choo!

Outeniqua Power Van rail trip, George.

The Outeniqua Power Van is an old inspection trolley, used on the extremely steep line that crosses the Outeniqua Mountains via Cradock Kloof, more or less parallel to the historic Montagu Pass.

Near the top of the road pass, the five-arch railway bridge is a landmark, often used as a place to take a break and have a picnic. The Outeniqua Power Van consists of 2 carriages and carries up to 12 passengers right to the top of the mountains. It passes through six small tunnels, and at times the cuttings are so narrow you can touch the rock walls as you pass.
