Paternoster is the quintessential old Cape fishing village on the West Coast of South Africa. Paternoster’s Latin name means 'Our Father', and it is generally assumed that the village was named after the prayers said by shipwrecked Portuguese Catholic sailors. The earlier name, St Martin's Paternoster, was used on maps until 1693.
There’s enough in Paternoster to keep you sane - three restaurants, a tiny pottery and a quirky shop - but enough missing to help you unwind and get back in touch with yourself. What started out as a fishing village has now been inundated with holiday homes; but Paternoster has managed to retain its white-washed West Coast charm.
There are wide beaches that beg to be walked and afternoons that require nothing more than a good book and a cup of tea. Popular outdoor activities in Paternoster include long walks on the beaches, fishing, boat and land-based cray-fishing, diving and spearfishing excursions, hiking trails, mountain biking and sea kayaking.
