You may think you know the Garden Route, but not many have been up the Karatara / Ruigtevlei / Barrington Road. This rural corner immediately to the north of the N2 highway consists mainly of farmland and forestry plantations. This is good news for mountain bikers heading this way, as more and more private landowners are creating trails to drive outdoor tourism.
It’ll be difficult to spot the rumoured elephant as you give it gas along fast and flowing trails designed by a mountain biker, and for mountain bikers. Start off from Reception (near the Pump Track), immediately heading to the mountains along a gravel road by-passing the milking sheds.
Say goodbye to the cows and look out for a sign to your left onto the Yellow Trail (Forest Frenzy) just before the 2 kilometre mark. A few berms and jumps zip you into a thick, wooded area along a small stream, with a gentle ascent out into open terrain where you joined the Blue (Crazy Creek) Route at around 4 kilometres.
Three superb route options should entice you into this emerald green world! The 7 kilometres Green Route is perfect to tackle with your family or beginner buddies; it’ll give them a taste of what forest mountain biking is all about. The 20 kilometres Yellow Route cranks up the effort with more moderate climbs and awesome views to boot.
Finally, the 25 kilometres Blue Route’s stunning scenery is well worth the hard work. It first follows a general downwards direction and then the unavoidable opposite. Mostly the climbing is not too bad, but some places have teeth. The last third of the route is once again generally level(ish). Obtain your permit; then park at the designated parking area at the trails’ head where you’ll find maps of the area and routes on big display boards.
The Goukamma Nature Reserve near Sedgefield has a number of breathtaking trails to walk, run or hike. Stroll through the Milkwood forests and beach area where phenomenal dune vegetation grows.
The coastline stretches for about 14 kilometers and is a fabulous day walk. There is also the option of the 16 kilometer Groenvlei route which is rather strenuous. Other choices are the lake walk and the circular route. This whole area allows lovely views of freshwater lakes and coastal dunes. In whale season you may even be able to spot the Southern right whales gracing the waters.
