As the town of Maclear is closely located to the Drakensberg, it is a fantastic stopover for adventurous travellers who are keen to explore the foothills of the magnificent escarpment. There are several hiking trails, nature routes and 4x4 roads to enjoy in the area.
The dirt road between Maclear and the quaint town of Rhodes is part of the route to Naude’s Nek Pass, which is a historic route that connects various towns throughout the Eastern Cape Highlands. The route was pioneered by two brothers, Stephanus David Naude and Gabriel Naude, in 1896.
If you are in a 4x4 vehicle, you’ll have lots of fun exploring the dirt road and meandering along the gorgeous scenery.
The Woodcliffe Cave Trail, situated in Joelshoek Valley near Maclear, must rate as one of southern Drakensberg's most scenic walks. Towering peaks, cascading waterfalls and tranquil streams will make this a walk to remember. It is a multi-day route with lots of natural beauty to offer.
You can hike to Tok's Cave (with four huts built into the rock) for your first night along the route, and then follow the circular Yellow Route on Day Two. A swim at Redcliffe or Skinny Dip Pool is a must, and you can pick up additional provisions at Woodcliffe farmhouse when you pass by.
Day Three will see you tackling the Red Route along an extreme and challenging hike, and this should only be attempted if you are both fit and experienced.
Continue along the Red Route on Day Four, skirting along the brow of the Drakensberg for breathtaking views before following Sephton's footpath down the berg for a gentle meander to Wide Valley Cottage.
