In the far north-eastern Cape, with the tapering buttresses of the Drakensberg before they dissolve into farmland, lies the small town of Maclear. It was named after Sir Thomas Maclear, who was a British astronomer at the Cape of Good Hope during colonial times.
The town has a frontier feel and provides basic provisions for travellers or holidaymakers on route to the Drakensberg or somewhere else in the Eastern Cape. Maclear is a quiet, laid-back village with old English charm and lots of natural beauty, especially in winter when the flowers bloom and the surrounding rolling hills become green.
