For nature lovers, the Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is the place to visit for a day trip. The mountain range has a self drive route on tarred roads, interspersed with picnic spots and viewpoints. With over 800 antelope, including sable, klipspringer, steenbok, zebra and over 320 listed bird species set in the Magaliesberg, it’s a great way to unwind and relax with nature.

You can also hike in the Kgaswane Mountain Reserve, with overnight amenities available for the longer routes. Hike to the summit, and stop off at the natural pools for a refreshing dip. There are also some shorter hiking routes for day trippers, with some lovely lookout points.

Stop at the top of Tierkloof in the Kgaswane Mountain Reserve at Rustenburg and make your way down to the rock pools. Formed in the quartz above Tierkloof Waterfall, they are like private spa baths with a spectacular view.

The Tierkloof Pools on the Summit Hiking Trail might just qualify as the best natural swimming pools... anywhere. Early on the second day of this two-day hike, the trail meanders through a fantastical natural sculpture garden, and shortly thereafter enters the kloof. The stream cascades down a series of falls and rapids, each one punctuated by a pool or a series of inter-leading pools and seemingly more inviting than the last.
