Trails at Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve mostly traverse a combination of exposed rocks and woodland forest. The surface suits technical running along well marked and maintained routes, all courtesy of the Tshwane Department of Nature Conservation and ‘Friends of Moreleta Kloof’ Organisation. Watch out for occasional fallen trees during seasonal thunderstorms, but other than this, Moreleta Kloof rates as some of the safest trails in Tshwane with plenty of people using the reserve.
Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve boasts a range of technical single-track trails for walking, all set within a tranquil woodland interspersed with forested thickets. There are three primary routes (the Duiker, Suikerbos and Rademeyer Trails) to choose from, with distances varying from an easy 1.5 km to a tougher 6.5 km loop combining all the various Moreleta routes.
The primary route follows the kloof, starting with an easy downhill straight before morphing into some technical, fun single-track. Beware the occasional loose rock or gravel patch and enjoy the continuous ups and downs allowing you to rise above the surrounding suburbs of Tshwane.
Moreleta Kloof must be approached with some caution as trails may be very slippery, especially early in the morning or following rain showers. Security at the reserve is excellent, with guards patrolling the perimeter to keep out any unwanted elements. As is normal for Gauteng, it makes sense to avoid Moreleta during the Highveld thunderstorm season.
Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve rates eminently suitable for beginner trail runners keen to move from tarmac to trail. The technical single-track, fast downhills and punchy climbs will however be rewarding to more experienced runners, too.
