Lady Grey is a small Victorian village in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, dominated by the towering buttresses and spurs of the Witteberg ranges.
This northerly corner of the Eastern Cape nestles up against the majestic mountain Kingdom of Lesotho. Lady Grey is a considerable trek from just about any major urban centre, but visitors who commit to the gravel road trip will be utterly charmed by the laid-back lifestyle of this rural hamlet.
The highest of the Witteberg peaks skyline at a dizzying 2 408 metres, stretching along the horizon for about 60 km from Lundin's Nek in the east to Lady Grey in the west.
Lady Grey languishes within the shadows of these rugged ranges, and denotes the trailhead for the annual Salomon SkyRun, unarguably one of South Africa’s premier trail running events.
The area is rich in sandstone, fossil beds and San rock art. The Lady Grey Dam, built in 1925, is a great swimming spot - there’s a rock pool below the dam - and picnics. A natural staircase allows you to scale the wall of the dam. The tiny village is also famous for its annual Nativity Play, and its quaint houses, incredible scenery and endless list of outdoor activities make it well worth a visit.
